I paint a simple life. Dogs bark, babies cry, children shout and laugh in playgrounds but the life is quiet and uncomplicated.
There is a distinct absence of the familiar things we see around us today, cars, satellite dishes, mobile phones etc. yet everything is still familiar to us.
I paint a life that our parents and grandparents lived and I only knew as a child. My memories of this time, as with most memories, are selective. They discard the hardship in favour of the homely.
As people grow so do generations and each generation grows to be less naïve than the last. Unfortunately as each generation becomes more sophisticated something gets lost.
In some aspects humility is replaced with cynicism and fear replaces ignorance.
My world is not pretty or particularly easy but it is full of heart. It is filled with honest people simply getting on with their lives.
It has structure and routine and is more concerned with the reality rather than the cosmetic.
